Life in "Ascoli Piceno" is distinguished by such friendly ways as are not always found in the renowned tourist centers, and above all by a genuineness that suggests the taste of unadulterated country wine or the flavor of locally distilled anisette.
Rosso Piceno, Rosso Piceno Superiore, Falerio dei Colli Ascolani
The fine "Rosso Piceno", with a pleasant-tasting and ruby red color, received the award “DOC” (guarantee of origin) in 1968, even though his history get started before the Roman settlement in the Picenes territory.
The "Falerio dei Colli Ascolani" is a dry white wine and it’s excellent as aperitif. His name derives by a town of the Roman empire, “Faleria”, today named “Falerone”.
Curiosity: Polibio is a Latin poet and it is said that Annibale, while was arriving at Rome, stopped in Picenes aerea. He saw that his horses had problems and he ordered to care for them with the mature red wine…. According to “Plinio il Vecchio” the “Picenum” wines of the Marche territory were the wines with a mellow and flavoured taste!
From the land of the Picenes a liquor to conquer the word: the "Anisetta Meletti"! The “Anisetta Meletti” was invented and produced for the first time in 1870 by Silvio Meletti. It is an aniseed-based liquor and the special quality of the aniseed (Pimpinella Anisum) is carefully cultivated in certain areas of clay soil around Ascoli Piceno. The distillation is made with a production of a bain-marie with very slow evaporation. The same family gave the name to the "Caffè Meletti" one of the few Italy’s Historical Cafés, also visited incognito by King Vittorio Emanuele, between 1908 and 1910. (www.caffemeletti.com)
Curiosity: The original book of the eighteenth century was kept by the family in a small museum by the “Distilleria Meletti”. (www.meletti.it). King Umberto 1st gives to Meletti Company the patent of “Supplier of the Royal House”.
